v.(动词)

1. continue的基本意思是“继续”,指动作或状态的继续或持续不中断。可表示一件事一直在做,中间没有停歇; 也可以表示中间有一个中断,又接着做下去。
2. continue可用作不及物动词,也可用作及物动词。用作及物动词时可接名词、动名词、动词不定式或that从句作宾语,也可以接as短语充当补足语的复合宾语。continue还可引出直接引语。
3. continue还可用作系动词,接(to be+) adj. 或as+ n. 作表语, to be常可以省略。

1. still continue是个很多余的用法，应该避免，去掉still，用continue就可以了；
2. continue一般后面常接不定式，比较普遍，而很少用现在分词。不过在作及物动词时，把现在分词看做动名词也是可以的。

   The baby continued to cry all night.
   这个婴儿一晚上都在哭。

3. continue后面接不定式或者现在分词，都解释为“不停地……”而不是“停止后继续……”的意思。

   The baby continued to cry (或crying) all night.
   句子不可改为The baby continued to cry (或 crying) at eleven o'clock。

4. continue解释为“(在停止后）继续……”的时候，后接的宾语常有story， article， narrative，discourse，journey等。

   The author will continue the story in another volume.

abide, continue，endure，last，persist

这几个词都含有无限期地存在或处于特定进程、状态中的意思，即“继续”“存在”，其区别在于:

（1）从含意上说：abide强调稳定与持久；continue强调没有结束，而不在乎其持续时间或性质；last强调其存在时间超过正常或所期望（有限定词限定时除外）；pesist也强调持续时间超过正常或规定，另外，在指偶发性事件时还常含复发之意；而endure还多一层抗争的意味，尢指与破坏性的因素抗争。

（2）从用法上说：abide,endure,persist是不及物动词；而continue和last则既可用作不及物动词，也可用发作及物动词。

例如：

Though many features were abiding, the changes were much felt.尽管某些特征依然存在，仍可感到发生的各种变化。

The weather continued fine.天气仍然很好。

The war lasted five years.这场战争连续打了5年。

The hot weather lasted until September.炎热的天气一直持续到9月。

The tendency still persists.那种倾向依然存在。

His fame endures for ever.他的声名永垂不朽。

continue，resume，succeed，go on

这些动词或短语均有“继续”之意。

continue普通用词。或指持续而不停止，或有一段中断后又继续下去。

resume指中断后的继续。

succeed侧重指有规律地连续。

go on通俗用词，多用于口语中。go on+-ing表暂停后继续做原事，相当于后继续的内容与原来的内容相同。go on+不定式指做完某事后，接着做不同的另一件事。

persist，last，endure，continue

这些动词均含有“持续”之意。

persist强调超过了指定的或正常的时间。

last着重存在的时间相当长，超过正常的或所期望的时间。

endure与last同义，但还指经受住，有能耐忍受而并不受损。

continue多指过程，强调持续而无终止，常含不间断之意。

误 The weather is still continuing cold and wet.

正 The weather continues cold and wet.

析 continue本身含有“持续”之意,不宜用于进行体,也不宜用still修饰。
