1. along用作副词的基本意思有二:一是“向前,往前”，常用在运动动词之后以加强其效果; 二是“一道,一起”，可用于人，也可用于物。用于美式英语还可指“接近”; 引申可指“在这里〔那里〕”。along通常和动态动词搭配使用。
2. along用作副词时不用于比较等级。

1. 作为介词时，与名词road，river，corridor，line等连用，常指那些有这细长外形的名词。

   I saw her running along the road.

2. 涉及到时期或活动时，常用through，如through the centuries（NOT along the centuries）和all through the journey（NOT all along the journey）。

这三个词语都有“始终，一直”的意思，都可表示过去已经存在或者发生的事。其区别是：

all along往往只表示事情的持续，此意义上，all along为非正式用法；always既表示持续，又强调反复；all the time表示在某一时间界限内的动作持续性。例如：

get along, go along, push along, run along, toddle along

作“离开，溜走”解时，这五个短语多用于口语。其区别是：

这两个词均可表示“方向”。across指沿着与其宾语所指事物交叉的方向,意思是“横过,横越”; along指沿着与其宾语所指事物平行的方向,尤指沿着细长或狭窄的物体,如走廊、公路等。

along, toward, to

1.along表示“动向”时，方向性不明确，意为“沿着”；toward的方向性很强，意为“朝，向”；to除表示方向性之外，还有“到达”的意思。试比较下面一组句子：

over常和动态动词连用，指“从……上面越过”或“横越”；表静态时，指“在彼处”。

through侧重从一端穿到另一端。
